Crane Kalman Brighton is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by young, British photographer, Samuel Hicks. 'On the Way' is a series of images shot whilst on various assignments in North America and feature the varied characters he met along the way. The exhibition will run from 4th June to 19th July 2009.
The work in 'On The Way' is characterised by Samuel's fascination with light; how it can transform a scene, change colours, create a mood and bring subjects to life. Often he will combine photographic lighting with natural light to lend a filmic quality and create a powerful narrative. Samuel aims to capture people in their true environment. He aims to connect to the individual, the link between subject and viewer, encouraging the dialogue between the two.
Having been involved in several group and mixed shows at Crane Kalman Brighton, this will be Samuel's first solo exhibition. His work will also be on display as part of the 'Robin Bell Silver Footprint' exhibition at The Independent Photographers Gallery and has shown at the AOP Gallery, London.
His work has been featured in many publications including Intersection, Wallpaper* and The Sunday Times Magazine and has been selected for several awards notably The London Photographic Awards, Association of Photographers Awards and Creative Review Photography Annual. Most recently he was selected by Archive Magazine as one of the Best 200 Advertising Photographers Worldwide, 2008.
On The Way – "The following images are from 3 trips to the States over 18 months, driving through Texas, New Mexico, California and Nevada.
These trips were essentially quite loose; sometimes we knew we had to be at a specific place in a week's time, but how we got there and where we stopped was decided along the way, sometimes by looking at the map, or often asking someone what it was like there.
I wanted to have a look around, see for myself..." – Samuel Hicks, 2008
Samuel Hicks: On The Way runs from 4th June to 19th July 2009 at Crane Kalman Brighton, 38 Kensington Gardens, North Laine, Brighton BN1 4AL. For further information, please call 01273 697096 or visit www.cranekalmanbrighton.com.
